Me: Yes, Benson.
Brett: Did you know that there is a song with Benson, Arizona in it?
Brett (still excited): It’s in a 1970’s Sci-fi film called ‘Dark Star’. It’s the theme song.
Both my sister and I are more amazed that Brett would know this obscure fact rather than there is some song about Benson, Arizona.
Stacey: Have there been any sightings of Space Aliens in Benson? (She is protective of me)
Brett explains that the film is not about Benson. The film takes place in space. The filmmaker just liked the song, and that even though it was written for a Sci-fi flick, the song itself is in a Country Western genre. He starts to recite some of the lyrics.
Brett: I’ll send you the mp3 of the song. I have always wanted to go to Benson.
Me: Cool. We’ll have internet tonight, so can hear it.
I promise Brett that I will take pictures of Benson and send them to him.
Not much later, Brett texts me all of the lyrics.
Here’s the serendipity part: As a much needed respite after boondocking for days with no water or electricity hook-ups in 100 degree heated desert, we treat ourselves to a night in an actual RV park (yea, AC!) Unbeknownst to us beforehand, the RV Park we’ve made a reservation in happens to have an onsite observatory!
So, we got to sit last night in the observatory, have a free class, and look through an amazing telescope at the Heavens. The answer as to why Benson, Arizona was used in a theme song for a Sci-fi film comes easily. The skies here behold our Universe with clarity and brilliance.
Benson, Arizona, blew warm wind through your hair.
My body flies the galaxy, my heart longs to be there.
Benson, Arizona, the same stars in the sky,
but they seemed so much kinder when we watched them, you and I…
