She: Will you be staying here long?
Lauré: No, just for a short time.
She: Are you missionaries?
Will anyone ever believe that we are asked this frequently? Yet we give no indication prior in regards to our purpose for this journey. No bumper stickers. No signs or decals. No T-shirts with “I am a Missionary” printed across the chest. No baseball hats with Crosses or Religious symbols. Just a sunflower plaque on Earl.
Our answers range from a simple “Yes” to more detail that we are actually on a Humanitarian Mission going where we feel called. I like stating my Episcopalian connection, because I’m proud to belong to a church that believes in social justice and righting the wrongs for those on the fringe or oppressed.
We have delightful interaction with our new neighbor, Jean. A Baptist who believes in community service. She and her husband, Frank, leave tomorrow for more northern summer weather. She volunteers Frank’s garden hose for L to use to wash the bugs off of Earl’s windshield.
Meeting Jean, and receiving her sincere welcome and generous spirit, gives us such a sense of peace and joy. God speed on their travels north to Ohio. May God give Frank the awareness and responsiveness needed for driving them such a distance.
