Crossing the very top of Texas. Cattle country. This is where the fast food industry gets beef that they can sell on their dollar menus. It’s plentiful.
We see one of these feed lots everywhere along Hwy 60. Signs commanding you to ‘Drink Milk, Eat Beef’.
The state park we stayed in last night was really nice and well-kept. However, you could not use the water, because of the high Nitrate count. No wonder. Surrounded by millions of cows, the small waterways and aquafers cannot stay clean. Thank goodness we were upwind!
I’m not a vegetarian. I’ve tried over the years. I seek out protein in every alternative way, but my body still craves meat. My taste buds still swoon for dairy (Cheeses, Butter, Gelato). We’ve been able to narrow down our consumption considerably, especially when our family all agreed to focus on quality verses quantity. I had two very athletic teenagers that needed lots of nutrients and proteins to replenish their muscles and growth. Grace alone ate 5 meals a day, and always had seconds at dinner.
I am a full-blown ‘Foodie’ and am the cook for our family. Always exploring new flavors and healthy recipes, I seek out products that complement our dietary and pleasure needs, as well as being nominally processed.
Looking at this despicable method of livestock husbandry just reinforces our commitment to only support sustainable and humane-focused companies. I believe that when God gave humankind dominion over all the other life forms on this Earth, it was ethical stewardship that was intended.
